Curriculum
The Foundation Programme curriculum has been developed in response to The New Doctor, published by the General Medical Council and Modernising Medical Careers: The Next Steps. It gives a framework for educational development that will support the first two years of professional development after graduation from medical school.
This revised Curriculum for the foundation years in postgraduate medical education updates the document published in 2005. It identifies the importance of supervised, practice based learning and offers further explanation of the educational framework upon which the Curriculum is based. It also provides more examples of what effective implementation could look like in a range of clinical settings.
This Curriculum is designed to be read by foundation doctors and the deliverers of their education, and also by those responsible for quality assurance locally and nationally. Some areas of the document are most appropriate for particular groups (eg Section 4 for foundation doctors).
This document should be used as a reference guide for:
- Examples of questions to think about when checking whether the key aspects of clinical practice are being considered
- What should be taught and learnt in specific settings, for example acute care
- What skills assessors and supervisors are expected to show in order to carry out their roles effectively.
