Assessment
There is now a single training and assessment system for doctors wishing to obtain a Certificate of Completion of Training in General Practice.1 If you want to become a fully qualified GP in the UK, then you must pass through this system. Successful completion of the assessment will enable you to enter the GP Register and become a member of the Royal College of General Practitioners.
The new assessment includes three components1:
- Applied Knowledge Test
- Clinical Skills Assessment
- Workplace-Based Assessment.
The Applied Knowledge Test is a traditional 3 hour multiple choice question exam.
In the Clinical Skills Assessment your clinical skills will be assessed in 13 appointments with patients - each lasting around 10 minutes.
Workplace-Based Assessment "is the evaluation of a doctor's progress in their performance over time, in those areas of professional practice best tested in the workplace."1 It is a key part of assessment and it should bring work and learning and assessment closer together and enable a real-life assessment of a doctor's skills.
