How do I register for BMJ Learning?
To register for BMJ Learning you need a valid email address, which will become your username. You will also need to create a password, which must be at least six characters long. Registration is quick, simple, and free.
Why do I have to register to use BMJ Learning?
We ask you to register so that you have your own individual record of your learning plan on the BMJ Portfolio website. The BMJ Portfolio is strictly confidential to you, and an excellent way to keep track of the CME/CPD credits you have achieved.
Can I try BMJ Learning for free?
We have a selection of free modules that you can try before committing to paying for access. You'll need to register to access the free modules. Registration is quick, simple, and free.
What hardware and software do I need to use BMJ Learning?
All you need is a computer with an internet connection and a web browser. We test our site in Internet Explorer (7 to latest version), Firefox, Chrome and Safari, Android for Samsung, and on iOS for iPhone and iPad.

Is BMJ Learning relevant to me?
Any healthcare professional will benefit from using BMJ Learning. We have modules designed for everyone, including GPs, GP trainees, hospital doctors, foundation year doctors, practice nurses, and practice managers.
When you sign in to your account you will see a personalised homepage, with modules recommended to you based on your location, profession, and specialty. You can also browse a full list of modules by clicking the "Browse all modules" button that appears at the top of most pages.
Where do I start? What modules should I be completing?
When you are signed in to BMJ Learning, you will see your personal homepage. This will display relevant modules for you based on what you've told us about your location, profession, and specialty.
You can use the search box at the top right of every page to search for a specific module or topic. You can also browse by clicking the "Browse all modules" button that appears at the top of most pages.
If you sign up for BMJ Learning email alerts, we'll keep you up to date with popular modules and new releases.
Can I access the site from home or the office?
You can use your username to sign in from any computer, at home or in the office. If you change your email address then there is no need to re-register. Simply update your details.
What do you do with my registration information?
What if I forget my password?
My details have changed. What do I do?
You can update your details at any time. You can change your profession and specialty details, and also update your contact details. There is no need to re-register.
How do I access the full site? Will I need to pay?
You can use BMJ Learning free of charge if you are a BMA member or if your institution has purchased access. Otherwise, to access the full range of learning modules relevant to your specialty or profession, you will need a subscription.
We also have a range of free modules that anyone can try. You'll need to register to access the free modules. Registration is quick, simple, and free.
How much does it cost to access the learning modules on BMJ Learning?

Is VAT payable on subscriptions?
Any VAT payable is calculated for you online.
Online access for customers in the UK is subject to UK VAT at the standard rate. Online access for customers in the EU is subject to VAT at the rate applicable in their EU country.
Subscriptions by customers outside the UK and EU do not fall within the scope of UK VAT.

Can I pay online?
Yes, you can make an online payment when you subscribe.
How long will my subscription last?
Your subscription to the learning modules will last one year.
Am I able to purchase a subscription for my institution?
Yes. For institutional subscription rates, please contact our sales team (email@example.com) or telephone +44 (0)20 7383 6693. Discounted rates are available for institutions subscribing to multiple products from the BMJ Group.
Can I access BMJ Learning via Athens or Shibboleth?
If your institution has a subscription to BMJ Learning you can sign in using Athens authentication. Your institution must be registered with Athens, and the Athens ID must be associated with your institutional account. If you need any assistance with your Athens login, please click here.
You can also log into BMJ Learning through Shibboleth. Go to our Shibboleth access page and choose the federation to which your institution belongs. After making a selection you'll need to choose your institution. You'll then be asked for your institutional username and password.

When can I start accessing the learning modules?
Once you have completed the registration process, you will be able to access the free modules immediately.
If you buy a subscription, you will have access to all the modules included in that subscription as soon as you have made your online payment.
For other methods of payment (direct debit, post, or telephone) there may be some delay while we process your transaction. We will inform you when your payment has been processed and you can start accessing the modules.

Cancelling a monthly subscription
To cancel your subscription please call our Customer Service team on +44 (0)207 111 1105 or email them at firstname.lastname@example.org. Cancellations can only be processed during normal working hours (Monday to Friday, 8 am to 6 pm GMT) and take effect at the end of your current subscription month.
Please note that at the moment, it is not possible to sign up for a second monthly subscription if you have previously cancelled one. We plan to introduce this option in the future, but in the meantime, if you wished to resume using BMJ Learning after having cancelled, you would need to take out an annual subscription.
I am a BMA member. How do I claim my free access to BMJ Learning?
BMA members gain free access to BMJ Learning as part of their package of membership benefits. You will be asked to provide your BMA membership number when completing the registration form.
Please note that some specialist content on the BMJ Learning site, such as the pre-hospital care modules, require an add-on subscription and is not available as part of the standard subscription offered to BMA members.
I am already registered in BMJ Learning. How do I update my account to claim my free BMA member access?
You'll need to update your details. If you're already signed in, you can click the "My account" link at the top right of the screen at any time, and choose "Update my details". This will take you to your account page, where you can edit your details and add your BMA number.

Am I able to stop a module midway through and finish it later?
Yes. As soon as you begin a module it is added to your BMJ Portfolio. From here, you can continue and complete modules at your own pace.
How long does a module take to complete?
Every module is different, but on average it will take you between 30 and 90 minutes to complete a module. Don't worry if you get interrupted. Your progress is automatically saved in your BMJ Portfolio, and you can start from where you left off.
How do I find out when a new module is published?
If you have signed up for email alerts, you will be notified when new content relevant to your profession is published. You can find the most recent modules on your personal homepage when you are signed in.
How do I search for a module?
You can use the search box at the top right of every page to search for keywords. The search box will suggest likely modules as you start to type. Continue typing to narrow the list of suggestions, or hit enter to submit your search.
You can also click the "Browse all modules" button that appears at the top of most pages. This lets you browse a full list of modules.
How do I resume a module I have started?
On the start page of a module you have started you will see a "Resume module" button. This will take you to the point of the module at which you left. You can navigate to the start page of the module using the link in BMJ Portfolio, by searching for the module, or by browsing.
Can I retake a module?
Yes. On the start page of a module you have completed you will see a "Retake module" button. Please be aware that retaking a module will reset your score.
Can I browse a module I have already taken?
At the moment, it is not possible to browse a module you have already taken without retaking that module.
How often is BMJ Learning updated?
BMJ Learning publishes brand new content on a regular basis. We also review and update modules regularly. This can occur sooner if there are changes to practice or guidelines, or if new studies are published. Your feedback also helps us keep the site up to date.
Where does BMJ Learning get the content from?
As a leading medical publisher, BMJ Group has many links worldwide to authors, editors, and medical experts. We use these contacts to bring you the most up-to-date, validated, informed, evidence-based material.
How is BMJ Learning funded?
BMJ Learning receives income from a range of sources to ensure wide and affordable access while maintaining editorial independence.
BMJ Learning receives income from the BMA to provide free access to BMA members.
BMJ Learning also contracts with a range of bodies, including the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, to produce custom learning modules. Where a module has been created under contract, this is indicated clearly on the module.
BMJ Learning carries advertising. Advertisers have no involvement with editorial content.
Is BMJ Learning available in other languages?
Yes. As well as English, a selection of BMJ Learning modules are available in:
You can change your preferred language by using the menu at the top right of the page.
We haven't translated all our modules, so by changing your language, you'll see a smaller number of modules in the browse menu and in your search results. You can view our full catalogue by switching back to English.
You can take modules in a variety of languages if you like, but you can't change your language partway through a module.
How do I get permission to reuse content from BMJ Learning in a journal, textbook or other published product?
Please send full details of your permission request to email@example.com and someone from BMJ's dedicated Permissions department will be happy to assist.
Can I receive CPD/CME points by completing a module?
Yes. Several organisations accredit BMJ Learning modules, allowing you to gain CME/CPD points.
BMJ Portfolio automatically keeps track of your learning. You can choose between different accreditors, and can switch between accumulating points or hours. You can use your own points system if you wish.
You can produce reports from your portfolio to use during an appraisal. You can also print off a certificate for each module you have completed and passed.

How do I print a certificate?
You have two options:
- Go to BMJ Portfolio and look for the module you're interested in. Clicking the link icon for that module (towards the right of the screen) will take you to that module's page in BMJ Learning, where you can print or save a copy of the certificate
- Use the search box that appears on the top right of every BMJ Learning page and search for the module that you have completed and passed. This will take you to the first page of the module, and you will be able to print or save a copy of the certificate.
Where can I find a record of all my learning?
All the modules you start are automatically added to your BMJ Portfolio.
Can I upload BMJ eLearning modules to my organisation’s LMS?
Yes, we can provide our modules as SCORM/XAPi exports to sit on your own learning management system (LMS).
If you don’t currently have an LMS at your organisation, we have partnered with Think Associates to offer BMJ Learning content on Totara Learn to healthcare organisations in the UK. Organisations can manage access and report on their usage as part of their wider learning and development portfolio. Learners will also benefit by having access to all their learning needs from one central learning portal.

How do I personalise my BMJ Learning page?
The recommended modules on your personal home page are based on the preferences you have selected in your account. To change them, you'll need to update your details. If you're already signed in, you can click the "My account" link at the top right of the screen at any time, and choose "Update my details".
