Arrhythmias in adult patients with complex congenital heart disease

Learn to appropriately assess and manage adult complex congenital heart disease patients presenting with atrial tachyarrhythmias.

Learning outcomes

After completing this module you should:

  • Be able to perform a thorough assessment of and appropriately manage patients with complex congenital heart disease when they present with an atrial tachyarrhythmia
  • Be able to recognise the nuances that characterise different aspects of the electrocardiogram (ECG) in patients with complex congenital heart disease
  • Understand the basic cardiac anatomy of individuals born with a univentricular heart
  • Know what surgical procedures patients born with a univentricular heart may have had in childhood to correct their underlying congenital anomalies
  • Understand why the presence of surgical scars and chronic alterations in pressure/volume loads associated with univentricular hearts represent the perfect myocardial substrate from which life threatening tachyarrhythmias may emanate from
