Guideline focus: multiple sclerosis (NICE)

This module covers the practical implications of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) clinical guideline 186 for GPs in relation to diagnosis, information and support, relapse treatment, and management of multiple sclerosis (MS) related symptoms, but not including disease modifying treatments.

Learning outcomes

After completing this module you should understand:

  • When to suspect multiple sclerosis (MS) and what investigations to carry out in general practice
  • The importance of encouraging exercise in people with MS
  • The issues surrounding pregnancy in people of childbearing age with MS
  • Advice on dietary supplements for treating MS and its symptoms
  • How to effectively alleviate spasticity in people with MS
  • How to assess and treat common comorbidities in people with MS
  • How to best manage relapses in people with MS.
