Severe sepsis and septic shock: diagnosis and management- Archived [?]

A module outlining the diagnosis and treatment of sepsis, severe sepsis, and septic shock.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this module you should:

  • Be able to diagnose patients with sepsis, severe sepsis, and septic shock
  • Know how to resuscitate such patients with fluids and vasoactive drugs
  • Be aware of the more advanced therapeutic options available
  • Follow the new guidelines of the Surviving Sepsis Campaign 2012.

In February 2016 new diagnostic definitions of sepsis were published by the Third International Consensus, the so called Sepsis-3. Details can be viewed here. In the UK, NICE published the guideline (NG51) on Sepsis: recognition, diagnosis and early management in July 2016. We are in the course of updating this module in line with the guidance, but please bear in mind that it does not yet incorporate the new NICE recommendations.
