Managing psychosocial issues in palliative care

This module describes psychological factors associated with serious illnesses, the process of adaptation and coping, and how best to manage affected patients.

Learning outcomes

After reading this module, you should be able to:

  • Understand factors that influence an individual's adjustment to cancer or chronic diseases
  • Define the concept of distress and use that as the first step in understanding the behaviours and emotions of people with chronic diseases
  • Identify the common psychiatric disorders that occur in patients who need palliative care
  • Manage psychiatric illnesses in patients receiving palliative care.
