Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: long term management

Work through interactive patient cases to update your knowledge of the role and relative value of drug and non-drug therapies in controlling symptoms and improving outcomes in COPD.

Learning outcomes

After completing this module, you should:

  • Know how best to support smoking cessation in patients with COPD
  • Understand the role of pulmonary rehabilitation in patients with COPD
  • Know the indications for long term oxygen therapy in patients with COPD
  • Understand the role and cost effectiveness of drug and non-drug therapies in patients with COPD.

Note: In July 2019, NICE updated its December 2018 guideline "Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in over 16s: diagnosis and management" [NG115]. NICE made new recommendations on inhaled triple therapy for stable COPD and systemic corticosteroids for managing exacerbations. We are in the course of updating this module in line with the guidance but please bear in mind that it does not yet incorporate the newest NICE recommendations.
