Preparing effectively for the Multi-Specialty Recruitment Assessment

Every year, over 15,000 junior doctors apply for Specialty Training posts. Nearly half of them will have to undertake a computer based test known as the Multi-Specialty Recruitment Assessment (MSRA). There are five ST1 specialties that incorporate a ‘Stage 2’ into their application process: Clinical Radiology, General Practice, Ophthalmology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry (for 2018, ST1 Child and Adolescent Psychiatry was piloted as a run-through programme, which will continue for 2019). Each specialty using the MSRA as a selection tool incorporates it differently, so it is advisable to check with individual recruiter guidance. The MSRA is a selection tool designed to assess the professional attributes, judgement, and employability that is expected of a foundation year two doctor making a transition into specialty training.

  • Understand how to prepare effectively for the MSRA
  • Appreciate the methodology behind the MSRA, touching upon the five potential question styles
  • Practise tackling typical question types from both papers, and know where to locate useful resources

NB: The MSRA was originally called the SRA (Specialty Recruitment Assessment), but in recent years many other specialties have started using this assessment, hence why it is now referred to as the MSRA.
