Surgical site infection: a primary care focus on prevention and management

This module will show you how to recognise an infected surgical wound, and manage surgical site infection.

Learning outcomes

After completing this module you should:

  • Feel more confident in answering patients' questions about postoperative wounds
  • Be able to recognise when a surgical wound is infected
  • Be able to manage surgical site infection
  • Know when to refer patients back to secondary care, or when to refer for secondary care support if the surgery was done in primary care
  • Understand the indications for giving prophylactic antibiotics before surgery, and when you might need to consider doing this before minor surgery in primary care.
